  • Real-world events often seem to catch the social sciences by surprise, leading to serious policy failures. We tend to "flatten" the world into one coherent homogeneity. GIGA President Prof. Amrita Narlikar argues that a global approach may help us overcome the problem. Scholarship needs to factor in the cultural characteristics of new players, on their own terms and in comparative perspective. This is for a very simple reason: because they matter. For policy and practice, this means recognising diversity and then exploring the new negotiating space that emerges from this knowledge.

What could this new global approach look like – and how can it be implemented? At the presentation of the first issue of the new GIGA Focus series, our panel will discuss these and other questions. We cordially invite you to join us.

Panellists Professor Amrita Narlikar, President of the GIGA Dr. Thomas Bagger, Head of Policy Planning at the German Federal Foreign Office Professor Laurence Whitehead, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford Dr. Stephan Rosiny, Research Fellow at the GIGA Dr. Christian von Soest, Head of Research Programme Peace and Security at the GIGA
