On 21 September 2019, we are pleased to welcome the Yemeni women's and human rights activist Hooria Mashhour to the University of Hamburg. In 2012, Hooria Mashhour was appointed the first human rights minister in Yemen, and has been campaigning against corruption, ill-treatment, and imprisonment that violates human dignity ever since.
Activist for peace in Yemen
Hooria Mashhour is particularly committed to women's rights and against child marriage. She advocated in Yemen for legal regulations that make it illegal to disregard children's rights.
In 2014, she had to give up her ministerial post on grounds of personal safety and moved to Aden.
Before, during, and after that time, she repeatedly spoke out against drone attacks from Saudi Arabia and the US in Yemen, which cost the lives of numerous civilians and destroyed schools and hospitals. In addition, Mashhour campaigned against the crimes of the former regime.
„The only solution in Yemen is peace. The situation is devastating, people have no water, no electricity, no medicines and no food. “ – Hooria Mashhour, Interview with qantara.de 2016
