  • The Research Network on Sustainable Global Supply Chains partners with the Forum on Globalization and Industrialization (FGI), and the Learning and Knowledge Development Facility (LKDF) to convene a Forum organized under the theme “Skills for Sustainability in Global Supply Chains”. The event will take place on 13 and 14 November 2023 at the Vienna International Centre (VIC), in a hybrid format.

Participation in global supply chains has been shown to be an important driver of productivity gains and employment creation, but social and environmental conditions in supply chains have, in many cases, improved little. The Forum thus emphasizes the critical role of skills development in achieving sustainability in the supply chain, particularly in light of the increasing number of mandatory due diligence regulations being adopted and implemented in the Global North. The discussions will revolve around how developing and industrializing economies can better position themselves in global supply chains by improving skills and knowledge relevant to sustainable industrialization.

The Forum will provide a platform for exchange including policy makers, development practitioners, representatives from the private sector (companies, associations, and organizations), experts from academia (universities and research institutions), civil society, non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations. It will consist of a plenary session, two panel sessions and a half day workshop (closed event) focused on key aspects of skills development and sustainable supply chains. The format is designed to stimulate discussion, share innovative ideas, and address key questions related to help drive a conversation that addresses our constituency’s actual needs.

The FGI is a series of annual forums jointly organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW Kiel), the Kiel Centre for Globalization (KCG), and the The Research Network Sustainable Global Supply Chains. The research network is a joint initiative by the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), the German Institute for Development and Sustainability (IDOS), the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The Learning and Knowledge Development Facility (LKDF) is a joint initiative of UNIDO and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
