The political, economic and cultural links between the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States are many and established. It is worth noting that the EU has more association agreements with this region than with any other in the world, having signed comprehensive agreements with CARIFORUM, the Central American countries, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador, and is working towards a conclusion of negotiations with MERCOSUR. This close relationship is significant, specially understood in the context of a multipolar world where the geopolitical balance created after the World War II is changing, offering the EU and the a unique opportunity to rethink and strengthen their strategic ties.
This new geopolitical scenario, together with the Digital Revolution, will have significant effects on the development of Latin America and the Caribbean, considering trade, migration and technological channels. These aspects represent common opportunities and challenges for both societies and economies. The EU- CELAC Economic Forum will explore those policies that will contribute to further engagement between both regions.
It is hoped that the forum outcomes will feed into the EU -CELAC summit which will take place on October 26-27, in San Salvador.
