China and Globalization - New Era, New Challenges - European Symposium of the World Forum on China Studies

Over recent years, the world has been facing concurrently the trends of both globalization and de-globalization. The pros and cons of globalization’s effects upon China and Europe will be discussed in a conference held parallel to the forthcoming G20 Summit happening in Hamburg, Germany during July 2017.

China’s successful integration into the world economy has demonstrated the advantages of globalization, with China becoming one of the main drivers thereof worldwide. Populist and nationalist movements, however, represent new challenges to international trade growth, investment cooperation and global governance. These forces blame globalization for the loss of jobs and rising economic insecurity, as well as for changes in traditional cultural values. How will China react to these new challenges? How can China and the European Union work together to preserve the global governance institutions that have allowed global trade and investment to develop on a continual basis? How can both sides better cooperate so as to ensure that the costs and benefits of globalization are shared more equally around the world? These are the main questions to be taken up by the first European Symposium of the World Forum on China Studies, jointly organized by the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, the GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies, the CASS Institute of European Studies and the Bertelsmann Stiftung. The event will take place on 9–10 July 2017 in Berlin, Germany.

The symposium will discuss China’s participation in the process of globalization from a variety of different perspectives, including historical, political and economic ones. It will last one and a half days in total, commencing with the conference opening on 9 July and continuing with an academic discussion and the concluding plenary meeting on 10 July. There will be three parallel panels held: first, on current political and economic trends in China and the world at large; second, on global cultural dialogue and China’s transformation; and, third, on China and the global order.
