Cooperation Event
Book Presentation as Part of the Latin American and Caribbean Fall Festival
18/09/2018
11:30 a.m. (CEST)
The context in which international trade takes place is changing due to the emergence of global trends such as the international fragmentation of production and global value chains. The increasing trade in intermediate products and the new role of emerging countries such as China are other aspects of this new context. These changes have the potential to affect trade between the EU and Latin America, which has traditionally been based on complementarities and static advantages (natural resources endowment).
This lecture aims to provide new insights into trends in bilateral trade between these two regions by analysing the evolution of intra-industry trade within a North–South framework. It intends to answer, among others, the following questions: To what extent is this bilateral trade pattern changing? How are the new global parameters impacting the composition of this trade?
Speaker Prof. Dr. Óscar Rodil is the main author of the study “Progress in the Pattern of Intra-industrial Trade between the European Union and Latin America: The Cases of Brazil and Mexico. He is an associate professor in the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and a specialist on the global economy and international trade.
Moderation Prof. Dr. Sabine Kurtenbach is the acting director of the GIGA Institute for Latin American Studies and holds an honorary professorship at Philipps-University Marburg. She is the author of numerous works on Latin America which focus particularly on peace and conflict.
Latin American and Caribbean Fall Festival 2018 This lecture is part of the Latin American and Caribbean Fall, which officially starts on 18 September and is an initiative of the City of Hamburg and the Latin American and Caribbean consulates and embassies. It has taken place every year since 2014. The festival aims to enhance the visibility of Latin America and the Caribbean – and knowledge about them – in Hamburg through a series of diverse events. The EU-LAC Foundation is coordinating the festival activities this year.
The event will be held in English. Please register by 13 September 2018.
