The Art of English Academic Writing

  • The workshop aims at improving non-native English speakers' academic writing skills by highlighting typical features and composing elements commonly applied by native speakers of English. Participants will be equipped with a corresponding workbook, a broad variety of helpful techniques, and they will have ample opportunity to ask individual questions and receive immediate feedback on their own writing. 

    • Characteristic features of English and word(type) choices in English academic texts 

    • Pitfalls that non-native speakers of English are vulnerable to when writing in English and strategies to avoid them 

    • How to develop a more fluent and lively style of writing 

    • Resources, aids, and, strategies to help improve your writing on your own and techniques for enlarging and retaining your vocabulary 

    •  Selected punctuation issues 

    • Feedback on papers participants turn in 

    •  Amble room for questions and discussion 

    Dates

    The course takes place online on 25 October (9:30am - 6pm) and 19 November 2021. The participants will be divided in two groups at the second meeting:

    Group 1: 9:30am - 1pm

    Group 2: 2:30pm - 6pm

    About the trainer

    Dr. Kimberly Crow is German-American and was educated bilingually in both the US and Germany. After completing her university degrees in sociology, psychology, and social psychology, she worked as a social scientist and earned her PhD in political science. Since 2003 she has been coaching junior and senior researches from many different disciplines on how to improve their English academic writing and presentation skills. She is also an experienced academic editor and the author of numerous books on (academic) communication skills.
