Quantitative Field Research

  • The course ‘Quantitative field research’ is focused on introducing PhD students to the development of quantitative surveys to be conducted in countries of the global south. This course will be focused on three large themes: sampling (frames, procedures, and potential bias), the development of a survey (question formulation, pretesting, sensitive information, and survey experiments), and ethics and practicalities (informed consent, confidentiality, anonymity, and data management). Each of these themes will be introduced and discussed with the help of real-life examples provided by the lecturer and guest speakers. Additionally, students are asked to partake in in-class assignments.  

    Dates

    The online course will take place on 2, 3, and 4 June 2021 from 12pm to 4pm. A Zoom link to the course and a reading list will be provided to the participants after successful registration.  

    About the lecturer 

    Dr. Roos van der Haer is an assistant professor of International Relations at the Institute of Political Science, Leiden University (The Netherlands). Her current research focuses on the empirical examination of the role children and youth play in conflict, recruitment strategies of rebel groups, consequences of conflict, survey research, and more broadly, micro level conflict research. Her work has been published, among others, in the Journal of Peace Research, Journal of European International Relations, Conflict Management and Peace Science, Aggressive Behavior, International Journal of Social Research Methodology, and Survey Methodology. She has conducted field research in the DRC, Mali, Namibia, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.
