Qualitative field research – Examples from GIGA research

  • This short course gives insights into conducting qualitative field research in the Global South with a focus on expert interviews in South and Southeast Asia (India, Indonesia, and Malaysia). Different phases of research will be addressed: How to prepare field research, gaining access to interview partners, potential obstacles and stumbling blocks on-site, conducting the interviews, leaving the field, and preparing the data. The course will draw on the experience of the two lecturers, shows concrete examples, and leaves room to discuss and reflect on the participants’ own projects.

    About the lecturers 

    Johannes Plagemann is a research fellow at the GIGA Institute for Asian Studies. He is speaker of the research team “Ideas, Actors, and Global Politics.” He works on rising powers in international politics, and Indian foreign policy in particular. 

    Andreas Ufen is a senior research fellow at the GIGA Institute for Asian Studies. His research focuses on political parties, populism, political Islam, and democratization in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia and Malaysia.
