Date

14/10/2019 - 15/10/2019

  • The main objective of this course is to provide students skills in with qualitative research methods. The module will emphasize both methodological and practical aspects of conducting high quality research.  We will focus both on how researchers use qualitative data to answer research questions and on different techniques of data generation and analysis, including fieldwork. Topics included are process tracing andcomparative case studies; generating data through interviews, focus groups andobservations; ethnography; experiments; archival research, as well coding and interpreting data. We will explore the criteria of evidence and analytical rigor that apply when working with different techniques as well as the ethical and practical considerations that accompany many qualitative data generation processes. Discussions will also cover debates about research transparency and replication. The course is appropriate for students working exclusively with qualitative data as well as those who use it in conjunction with other research designs and types of information. The course aims to be interactive and students can explore both how the material relates to their own research projects and how to become a better consumer and critique of research based on qualitative data.
