Are firms and governments real entities the way chairs are? What is the best way of explaining social phenomena like markets and wars? Does the commitment to social justice hinder the pursuit of knowledge about the social world? During the course we will address these and other questions central to the philosophy of the social sciences. The purpose will be to gain understanding of the variety of metaphysical, epistemological and methodological commitments that shape research in the social sciences. Special attention will be devoted to discuss the proper role of social and ethical values in social scientific inquiry.

About the lecturer
Caterina Marchionni is a senior researcher in practical philosophy at the University of Helsinki. Her research has mainly focused on explanation, models, and evidence in economics and the social sciences. A list of Caterina’s publications and current projects can be found on her website.
