Since the 1990s, Randomized Control Trials (RCTs) have become a popular tool in impact evaluation, as they enable researchers to clearly identify causal effects of a given policy intervention on its beneficiaries. The 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics, which was awarded to Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty” is testament to the importance of the method especially in development economics.
Awareness of the importance of rigorous evaluations is also growing among development practitioners and funders, with multiple initiatives in the past years aiming to promote (more) rigorous evaluations in German development cooperation. One example is the RéUsSITE project, where GIGA and RWI researchers rigorously evaluate policy interventions that are part of the Special Initiative “Decent Work for a Just Transition”. In this session, we will use the example of these rigorous impact evaluations to learn about the approach and discuss its practical implementation, ranging from stakeholder interaction, over data collection, to obtaining and disseminating results.
