All across the social sciences, researchers are going into the “field” to collect data for research projects and learn about the world. In this GIGA session, we will provide examples from our qualitative and quantitative research projects. The focus of this session is on practicalities and planning of your fieldwork. We will discuss step-by-step how to plan your field research including what to take, how to establish first contacts with research facilitators, how to organize the logistics, how to collect your data and how to handle bureaucratic and administrative requirements. We will also give you some examples of how we dealt with unforeseeable situations. As a special guest, Edem Defly, our research facilitator from Lomé, Togo, will share his perspectives.
