This course provides a practical overview on concept formation and measurement in social sciences. Building on the participant’s topical interests, we will discuss different types of concepts as well as their use and usefulness for social science research. Moreover, we will discuss how we can operationalize and measure concepts properly and how we can judge the validity of measures. The course takes an applied perspective on the matter and makes use of participative, game-based learning tools to engage with the concepts at hand. Dates

About the lecturer
Saskia Ruth-Lovell is an Assistant Professor in Political Science at Radboud University, Netherlands. After her Diploma in Latin American Studies, she gained her PhD in Political Science from the University of Cologne, Germany and worked as a Post-Doc at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, and at the GIGA Institute for Latin American Studies (ILAS) in Hamburg. Her research focuses on the impact of clientelism and populism on different facets of representative democracy in Latin America and beyond.
