Analysing Qualitative Data Using MAXQDA

Date

06/06/2024 - 07/06/2024

  • The aim of this training course is to introduce you to using the software package, MAXQDA for the analysis of qualitative data. The course will cover the basics of coding and setting up a new project in MAXQDA, before moving on to some of the more advanced features such as visual tools, code variables and survey analysis. The course will start by outlining the key features of thematic analysis and how to perform this using MAXQDA. It will then turn to qualitative content analysis and how principles of mutual exclusivity and quantification can be achieved in practice. Importing qualitative survey data for mixed methods analysis will also be demonstrated. We will conclude the course by focusing on the new ‘AI Assist’ feature and discuss some of the key considerations when using this tool.

    The training is aimed at postgraduate students, who are encouraged to present any analysis issues that have arisen in the course of their research for collaborative discussion. This will be a hands-on training session and students will need to have access to MAXQDA (trial licenses can be provided)

    By the end of this course, students should:

    • Understand how to use MAXQDA to undertake a basic thematic analysis;

    • Appreciate how code variables can be used for qualitative content analysis or other mixed methods needs;

    • Know how survey data can be imported into MAXQDA and understand the survey data tools available within the programme

    • Evaluate the strengths and weakness of the ‘AI Assist’ Feature to aid qualitative analysis

    Dates

    The course will take place in person at the GIGA in Hamburg on the 6th and 7th June 2024, both days from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Please note that this course is open for external participants
