Student Research Assistant (m/f/d) for research project


  • The GIGA seeks to hire a Student Research Assistant (m/f/d) to support the research project “Religion for Peace: Investigating Messengers and Messages for Interreligious Peace” funded by the DFG (more information on the project). The weekly working hours are 10 hours, and the contract term is initially 6 months (with the possibility of extension) starting as soon as possible (earliest from September 01, 2025). Remuneration is based on the hourly rate for student assistants at the University of Hamburg and currently amounts to €13.98 (bachelor's student) / €16.05 (master's student) per hour. As part of the team, you will:

    • Support the data collection for a multi-site survey experiment conducted in Austria, Germany, Greece, Iraq, and Nigeria as well as data cleaning and analysis after data collection in R.

    • Review literature on different topics related to (religious) peace activism.

    • Learn about research processes including collaborative data collection efforts, as well as article and grant writing processes.

    • Participate in meetings and get to know the GIGA.

    Your qualifications:

    • Good proficiency in English. German-language skills are not a pre-requisite.

    • Proficiency in R and at least basic training in quantitative methods.

    • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and reliably.

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, especially Word and Excel.

    • Enrolment as a student of political science, sociology, area studies, (social) psychology or related social science discipline at a German university (if BA; 3rd semester or higher starting in April 2025), preferably in Hamburg or its vicinity.

    Desirable qualifications:

    • Experience with (online) quantitative data collection.

    • Experience with literature search tasks.

    • Excellent analytical and comparative skills.
