The GIGA seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow Applications are invited for a full-time position, with a contract of up to 16 months, starting on 1 June 2022. The position is designed for further professional qualification as defined in § 2 WissZeitVG (Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act). The salary is commensurate with TV-AVH / TVöD EG 13. The successful candidate will work as part of the project “Freedom and Development? Freedom of religion or belief, religious actors, and sustainable development,” funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and will primarily work on identifying religious actors that might be suitable partners for development co-operation. Tasks will include:
A comparative analysis of religious actors, especially Faith-Based Organisations (FBOs), in six countries (Burkina Faso, Eritrea, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, and Sudan), as potential partners for European and German development cooperation (including possibly the coordination of actor mappings for Ethiopia and Sudan)
Conceptualisation of the benefits and challenges regarding development cooperation with FBOs in general
Participation in knowledge-transfer activities such as writing briefing papers and contributing to public and other presentations
Co-authoring manuscripts for submission to scholarly journals
Statistical analyses of the relationship between religion and sustainable development – e.g. activities of religious actors in the context of freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) and selected sustainability goals (e.g. education, gender equality, peace and democracy) – are also possible.
A doctoral degree in Political Science, Economics, or other Social Sciences, or advanced doctoral studies
Comparative skills regarding qualitative comparisons
Conceptual skills for drafting recommendations on development policies
Knowledge of or keen interest in the topic of religion’s effects on sustainable development and politics, especially religious actors as partners for development cooperation
Ambition to pursue a career in academia or policymaking, or both
Statistical skills regarding cross-country time series, geo-referential regressions, or other related techniques (including visualisation skills) are an asset
German-language skills are an important asset (as required for knowledge transfer to the Ministry in terms of reports and general communication)
