Junior Professorship "Security Policy and Peace" (W1)

  • The School of Public Affairs at Leuphana University Lüneburg and the German Institute for Global and Area Studies invite applications for the following junior professorship:

    Security Policy and Peace (W1)

You innovatively combine security studies with peace and conflict research. Your research focuses on the emergence of violent conflict, the varieties of state-based security policies and/or the creation of stable peace orders between and within states, and your research speaks to questions of how security and peace are related to democracy’s complex transformations or to processes of democratization, democratic backlash, and autocratization. You investigate these topics with state-of-the-art comparative methods – quantitative, qualitative or both.

You are committed to academic excellence and societal relevance in your work and create an inspiring and dedicated environment in research, teaching, and learning. You bring your experience of international collaboration and ideally international research and/or teaching stays into our academic community.

This vacancy aims to attract a rising junior researcher at the postdoctoral stage of career development, with a visibly growing track record that promises to achieve the highest standards of academic excellence in publications, teaching and fundraising. Your specific and distinct profile in the analysis of security policies and its interconnections with questions of peace and conflict is demonstrated by relevant projects as well as publications and complements one or more of the focal areas of research at the Centre for the Study of Democracy (CSD). You have already published articles in relevant peer-reviewed national and in particular international journals or with reputed university presses and bring first experiences in and initiatives for (and ideally have been successful in) attracting external research funding, such as fellowships, grants or project funding. You are enthusiastic about developing research on democracy at the CSD further in cooperation with colleagues from the new School of Public Affairs and beyond, and about engaging the established research agenda on conflict, peace and security, particularly with respect to the role of identities, institutions, and international interventions at the GIGA. You actively contribute to the GIGA’s research, its Global Approach, and its mandate to conduct social science research on political, social, and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, as well as global issues. You are active in shaping the democratic framing of Leuphana’s university-wide profile themes under the headings of transformation, sustainability, civil society and digitalization. You demonstrate dedication to contributing to the IPS and its aim to establish broader collaborative and interdisciplinary research teams and themes, which aim specifically at large-scale project frames.

In teaching, you participate in all study programmes at the Institute of Political Science (IPS) where you cover courses related to security studies, peace and conflict, and bring in your unique research interests. You are dedicated to the highest standards of university didactics/innovative approaches to teaching and learning and committed to the unique Leuphana teaching model. You actively engage in developing study programmes at the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as in academic self-government and are open to contribute to Leuphana’s CPD study programme, within the limits of the legal teaching load of an assistant professor. The proven capability and willingness to teach courses in English is a prerequisite, as is the commitment to participate in teaching evaluations and the development of courses at Leuphana.

According to § 30 NHG, formal requirements are a university degree and  a doctoral degree in political science or a closely related discipline relevant to the open position; your aptitude for teaching; and your ability to engage in independent academic research as demonstrated by the outstanding quality of your dissertation.

The junior professorship will be filled in accordance with pay grade W1 and is initially limited to a period of three years. The position will be extended for an additional three years, subject to a positive academic evaluation (in accordance with the guidelines for the mid-term evaluation of junior professors of Leuphana University Lüneburg).
