One-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

The Cluster of Excellence "Contestations of the Liberal Script" (SCRIPTS) is located at Freie Universität Berlin, in cooperation with the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, the Hertie School, the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB), the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), the Center for Eastern European and International Studies (ZOiS), and the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO).

The Cluster of Excellence SCRIPTS assesses contemporary challenges for liberal democracy and market economy from historical, global, and comparative perspectives. It brings together expertise in social sciences and area studies in Berlin, and collaborates with research institutions as well as political, cultural and civil society groups worldwide.

The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) / Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien is an independent social-science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, and links this knowledge to questions of global significance. It combines region-specific analysis with innovative comparative research on accountability and participation, peace and security, globalisation and development, and global orders and foreign policies. Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) for a one-year Fellowship.

Applications are invited for a full-time position, with a 12-months contract, starting 1 September 2021. The salary is commensurate with EG 13 TV-AVH / TVöD, covered by a DFG replacement grant.

The successful candidate will help free up Professor Amrita Narlikar from teaching and some other obligations, giving her time to pursue research as a Co-Principal Investigator on the project “Leader Types and (Liberal?) Narratives of the COVID-19 Pandemic” funded by the DFG within the SCRIPTS Cluster of Excellence.

Tasks will include the teaching of two BA-level courses (International Relations & International Governance) at University of Hamburg, planned for the winter semester 2021/2022.

The successful candidate will

  • gain teaching experience,

  • assist with administrative & academic tasks,

  • pursue own research, and

  • have the opportunity to collaborate with Amrita Narlikar when research interests are complementary.

Mandatory qualifications:

  • an outstanding doctoral degree (or advanced postdoctoral studies) in political science

  • a clear International Relations research profile

  • excellent academic record

  • English-language proficiency

Desired qualifications:

  • teaching experience

  • German-language skills
