Latin American Courts Going Public: A Comparative Survey Assessment of the Use of Public Hearings and Amici Curiae

Lasa 2023, Vancouver Organisers: Latin American Studies Association Prof. Dr. Mariana Llanos (Speaker), Dr. Cordula Tibi Weber (Speaker), Dr. Pedro Costa (Speaker)

Over the last two decades, Latin American high courts have been opening themselves to the public through a variety of institutional innovations for social participation in the judicial decision-making process, such as public hearings and the acceptance of amicus curiae briefs. This paper explores such court behaviour through the analysis of an expert survey designed and implemented by the authors in ten Latin American countries during 2022.
