Prof. Dr. Martin Beck, an associate researcher at the GIGA, holds a chair of contemporary Middle East studies at the University of Southern Denmark. His current research interests include international and regional policy in the Middle East, the Israeli–Arab conflict, regional oil policy, and Lebanon. The research which this paper is based on was funded by the Carlsberg Foundation.
