For the second time since 2017, a young researcher from the GIGA received the Leibniz Dissertation Award: Dr. Felix Haaß for his doctoral thesis on the influence of development aid on democratisation processes in post-conflict societies.
The German Association for Peace and Conflict Studies has recognised Dr. Elisabeth Bunselmeyer, Graduate of the GIGA Doctoral Programme, for her dissertation on the reconciliation process following the Peruvian civil war.
Christine Berg, member of the GIGA Publications Department, was one of three winners of the IIAS Photo Contest 2019.
Latin America researcher Dr. Saskia Ruth-Lovell has been awarded the Political Studies Association’s 2018 Harrison Prize for her article on populism and institutional change.

Our research at Hamburg’s Summer of Knowledge 2019 at the Town Hall square: With lectures and games, the GIGA presented a selection of its current research on the topics of climate change and migration, youth as actors for peace, the Syrian war, public investment in developing countries, and open-access publishing.

Together with the Senate Chancellery Hamburg the GIGA organised the moderated panel discussion “India and Germany: Shared Values, Different Perspectives?” at Hamburg City Hall, where Prof. Dr. Amrita Narlikar, State Minister Niels Annen, and Chief Editor Andreas Cichowicz had a vivid exchange on this important partnership. The event was part of the “India Week Hamburg 2019”, to which we contributed on politics, economy, and culture.

For example, Prof. Dr. Narlikar was a guest at the WTO in Geneva and of different working groups of FDP and CDU in the German Bundestag.
