In Brief

New Doctoral Researchers at the GIGA

We welcome our new Doctoral Researchers, who joined the GIGA Doctoral Programme in October 2021.

In October 2021, Rosanna Fanni, Katharina Fietz, Diba Mirzaei, Johanna Pieper, and Askan Weidemann joined the GIGA Doctoral Programme. We’re thrilled to have you on board!

The diverse dissertation projects of our new Doctoral Researchers cover a fascinating spectrum of research questions, such as whether innovative technologies force new alliances, what the impacts of digitalisation of the Xinfang System in China are, and how the security situation in the Persian Gulf has changed given the rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Other projects deal with labour and environmental regulations in EU free trade agreements, and social protection systems and (in)formal labour markets in the Global South.

As part of our team, the Doctoral Researchers will profit from an international research landscape and the global research approach of the GIGA. During the virtual Welcome Days from 1 to 20 October, they will have the opportunity to get to know the GIGA’s regional institutes, research programmes, and service departments.

We wish our new teammates a great start at the GIGA and all the best for their dissertation projects.

GIGA Doctoral Programme

The GIGA has a long tradition of integrating young researchers into its research structure. This tradition culminated in the establishment of the GIGA Doctoral Programme. This programme seeks to provide a platform for young, international, and German academics, from which they can pursue their research and professional development, particularly in the field of comparative area studies (CAS).
