The FIV is a cooperation of 10 independent German research institutes. The FIV provides information for researchers, policymakers, and the general public, thus fulfilling the role of a national information resource, as outlined in the 1974 information programmes of the German federal government.
Collectively produced by FIV members, the WAO database is one of the largest social science databases in Europe and focuses on global, regional, foreign- and security-policy, economic, and social developments. It contains more than 859,000 references, consisting mainly of journal articles, book chapters, and grey literature.
The database represents a concentrated selection of literature in the fields of international relations, regional studies, and area studies with a focus on foreign and security policy and European policy. It was set up with the significant participation of the GIGA IZ. The database achieves a high level of quality through very sophisticated indexing with subject and regional classification and the multilingual European Thesaurus on International Relations and Area Studies (a joint product of European research institutes). The WAO database is accessible via the IREON gateway and additional online portals.
