  • The GIGA is proud to bring you the author of The Long Game Ambassador Shri Vijay Gokhale in conversation with Prof. Dr. Amrita Narlikar. The audience will have the opportunity to engage in discussion.

    The Long Game. How the Chinese Negotiate with India is an insightful analysis of India–China relations from an expert in Indian diplomacy. The book illustrates Chinese diplomatic negotiation strategy in historic perspective and with a sharp eye on recent developments. Indian Foreign Policy is assessed vis-à-vis the rise of China and its way of asserting its interests in Asia and globally.

    Ambassador Shri Vijay Gokhale is Distinguished Professor at the Symbiosis International University at Pune and Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Carnegie India in New Delhi. He has previously served as Indian Foreign Secretary from 2018 and 2020 and worked for nearly 40 years in the India Foreign Service. Among other positions, he was High Commissioner to Malaysia and Ambassador to Germany and China. Ambassador Gokhale has worked extensively on matters relating to the Indo-Pacific region with a special emphasis on Chinese politics and diplomacy, and has contributed opinion pieces to the New York Times, the Hindu, and the Indian Express.

    Prof. Dr Amrita Narlikar is the President of the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA). She also is Honorary Fellow of Darwin College (University of Cambridge), non-resident Senior Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), and Distinguished International Fellow of the Indian Association of International Studies (IAIS). Prof. Narlikar’s research expertise lies in the areas of multilateralism, international negotiation, WTO, and also rising powers. She is the author of Poverty Narratives and Power Paradoxes in International Trade Negotiations and Beyond (Cambridge University Press) and Bargaining with a Rising India: Lessons from the Mahabharata (with Aruna Narlikar, Oxford University Press) among many other books, articles, and media pieces. She will chair and moderate the event.
