  • The traditional “Western” concept of democracy as a universal goal is increasingly being challenged in all world regions. Living up to the GIGA’s truly global approach to scholarship, GIGA scholars will provide insights from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East into the diversity of democratic ideas and practices. They will underscore the value added of taking into account various philosophical traditions and historical experiences in research and policy on matters of democracy. We will also use the occasion to present our new GIGA Focus thematic edition, which addresses this topic.
