How Latin American States Protect Their Emigrants in Times of COVID-19

For a region as troubled by the pandemic as Latin America still is, the capacities displayed so far by some of its states to respond promptly to the needs of their emigrants have been remarkable. These capacities have been built over years in the field of emigrant policies, and sets important precedents for other regions elsewhere.

A Comprehensive Framework for Studying Migration Policies (and a Call to Observe Them beyond Immigration to the West)

This piece is both an exercise in critical conceptual landscaping in the field of Migration Studies and the proposal of an analytical framework that can correct some of its most serious biases. It promises advances for empirical agendas in this area of research.

Every Immigrant Is an Emigrant: How Migration Policies Shape the Paths to Integration (IMISEM)

Every immigrant to a country is the emigrant of another. The migration policies in both countries of origin and countries of destination define the migrants' options to enter, settle and belong to them. Using a comparative area studies angle - with cases from Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean - we develop a broadened perspective on migration policy landscapes, migrant selectivity, policy coherence and policy dilemmas.

Polities beyond Borders. The New Dynamics of Emigrant Politics and Policies in Latin America

Nation-states are no longer contained by their borders. In times of mass migration and dense transnational networks, states of origin reach out to their citizens abroad in wholly new ways. While the most popular emigrant policies include external voting and channels so that emigrants can send remittances to their states of origin, this project documented -for the first time ever for an entire world region- that emigrant policies also include social services (e.g. health and education), obligations, and the institutional and symbolic inclusion of emigrants.
