The GIGA Distinguished Speaker Lecture Series brings leading minds in academia and
policy from all over the world to the Institute to stimulate public exchange on key global developments. With its online format during the Coronavirus pandemic, we have additionally reached a global audience.
Initiated with funds from the Federal Foreign Office, both streams of the series – lectures by top scholars and leading practitioners – were inaugurated at City Hall hosted by the Hamburg Senate.
Speakers in the former category have included Professors Jagdish Bhagwati, Peter Katzenstein, Etel Solingen, Daniel Drezner, Henry Farrell & Abraham Newman, and others. The practitioners’ part was initiated by Frank-Walter Steinmeier (who was Foreign Minister at the time, now Federal President of Germany), followed by among others Federal Minister for Agriculture, Julia Klöckner, and NATO General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg. Since its inception in 2015 this GIGA flagship event is curated by our President Prof. Amrita Narlikar.
The withdrawal of the Western forces from Afghanistan leaves behind a country in disarray and many open questions. Ambassador von Brandt, Prof. Dr. Mattoo, and Prof. Dr. Narlikar will discuss the range of competing interests and the impact of the developments on regional and global order. The German Federal Foreign Office has put forth a comprehensive digitalisation strategy. The GIGA is proud to bring to you the two senior diplomats in charge of this policy. In their lecture, Ambassador Dr. Regine Grienberger and Ambassador Dr. Hinrich Thölken will address urgent matters of cyber foreign policy and the hopeful promise of digital transformation. Asymmetrically grown networks of informational and financial exchange allow states to use certain structural conditions for coercive ends. They increasingly “weaponize interdependence” with global effect. The lecture will present this new understanding of globalisation and power, which has clear policy implications.
