Guidelines for Borrowing Media

Protecting the health of our users and staff is our top priority. For that reason, access to the GIGA Information Centre (IZ) is limited. Beyond that, we have implemented further measures, which are documented in a so-called “hygiene concept.”

Borrowing in three steps

  1. Placing an order by e-mail Please order books (or, within reason, copies of articles) by way of e-mail to For books, please provide at least the title, author, publisher, date of publication, and, if available, the call number. For journal articles, we need the following information: title of article, author, title of journal, date of publication, issue number. We have elaborated here how you can find this information using our online catalogue: How to get necessary metadata using our online catalogue (pdf, German). If you haven’t borrowed anything from the GIGA IZ in the last 12 months, it would be helpful if you could also provide your complete information alongside your order: surname, given name, address (in Hamburg), telephone number, e-mail address, and address of primary residence (if different than Hamburg address).

  2. Making an appointment We will process your order on the next day the IZ is open. We will check which materials are available to borrow and respond to your email. You will receive a link to our booking system. Please use that to book an appointment to pick up your materials.

  3. Borrowing media Please arrive punctually, as we are present only at the agreed-upon time. To check materials out, please bring a valid form of identification (national ID card (Personalausweis) or comparable documentation including proof of address, e.g. passport plus formally documented registered address (Meldebestätigung)). The lending period is three weeks and may be extended once.

Neuer Jungfernstieg (collection excluding Asia): Upon entering the building, please turn left and walk up the stairs to the check-out desk on the 2nd floor. If you require the use of the elevator, please let us know by e-mail beforehand.

Rothenbaumchaussee (Asia collection): Upon entering the building, please turn left and go through the door into the Information Centre. Items are checked out on the ground floor.

Returns of media borrowed from either location are made without contact at Neuer Jungfernstieg 21. Returns may be made anytime from Monday through Friday between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. in any one of four deposit boxes in the foyer. Simply place the materials along with the borrowing slip with your name in any unlocked deposit box and set the lock. Exceptions may be made when new materials are to be borrowed upon the return of other materials. If all four deposit boxes are locked, please place your materials to return in the book return box at the ZBW.

Opening hours

The processing of incoming orders takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Materials may be borrowed on those days between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. once an appointment has been set. Open pick-up appointments are shown on our booking system. We strive to be available by telephone during these hours: at 040 42825-580 at our Neuer Jungfernstieg location, and at 040 428874-14 at our Rothenbaumchaussee location.
