GIGA Information Centre Reopens for Users

Welcome back! After the pandemic-related closure, the GIGA Information Centre is open again beginning Tuesday, 17 May, and welcomes researchers, students, and the public to its facilities.


  • The collection and the premises of the GIGA Information Centre are open to the public. At the GIGA’s main building at Neuer Jungfernstieg 21 in Hamburg, the Information Centre provides staff members and external users with up-to-date computer workstations and workplaces, equipped with modern furniture, sound-insulation panels, and individual, energy-saving lighting. There are wi-fi connections available in all areas of the Information Centre. There is also a group workroom available, which can also be used as a parent–child workroom.

    The GIGA is home to the largest non-university information centre for Area Studies and Comparative Area Studies in Germany. The four regional libraries collect literature on economic, political, and social developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The collection comprises approximately 200,000 books and 11,000 online journals – plus more than 120,000 online documents.The library also offers weekend loans.

    Opening hours: Neuer Jungfernstieg: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Collections: Africa, Latin America, Middle East, and Global (Comparative Area Studies, Theory and Methods).

    Rothenbaumchaussee: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Collection: Asia.

    Hygiene rules: Wearing an FFP2 (KN95) mask when moving around in the Information Centre rooms, as in the entire building, is obligatory; the mask may be removed at user workstations. A distance of 1.5 m from other persons must be maintained at all times.

    Disinfectant dispensers are available at the Information Centre’s entrance. Staff are required to ventilate the premises regularly.

The publicly accessible regional specialist libraries collect literature on economic, political and social developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East and maintain a supra-regional collection.
