A new line-up in the GIGA’s executive board: this body brings together experts on Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, as well as on global developments. Between them they steer the entire institute.

Hamburg, 25 October 2018 – After a worldwide selection process, the board of trustees of the GIGA appointed Prof. Dr. Matthias Basedau as the new director of the GIGA Institute for African Affairs from 1 October 2018. Prof. Basedau has worked in a number of roles of responsibility at the GIGA since 2002, and has since 2013 been an honorary professor of Political Science at the University of Hamburg too.
Also new in the executive board: long-standing GIGA colleague and honorary professor of the Philipps University of Marburg Prof. Dr. Sabine Kurtenbach along with Dr. André Bank, whose presence has strengthened the GIGA team since 2010. They have taken over as the acting directors of the Institutes of Latin American Studies and of Middle East Studies respectively, positions that they will hold until these directorships have been permanently filled following an international joint appointment procedure together with the University of Hamburg.
