  • Professor Louis Pauly will speak on global financial crises and political capacity to manage and prevent these and other risks. Professor Jann Lay will serve as chair and discussant. Prof. Dr. Louis W. Pauly, now Chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto, has held the Canada Research Chair in Globalization and Governance since 2002. As Director of the Centre for International Studies from 1997 to 2011, he helped build the foundations for the Munk School of Global Affairs. A graduate of Cornell University, the London School of Economics, New York University, and Fordham University, he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Last year, he held the Karl W. Deutsch Guest Professorship at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. In 2015, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award from the International Political Economy Section of the International Studies Association. Books | Selected Publications

    Apl. Prof. Dr. Jann Lay is Head of the GIGA research programme Socio-Economic Development in the Context of Globalisation and teaches at the University of Göttingen. He has published articles in various internationally renowned journals and has worked as a consultant for a number of international organisations and development agencies. He studies questions of economic development with a focus on labour markets, poverty and the distribution of income. His current research interests include the distributional impacts of climate change mitigation efforts, informal entrepreneurship, and the issue of "land grabs".

    The GIGA Distinguished Speaker Lecture Series brings leading minds in academia and policy from all over the world to Hamburg to stimulate public exchange on key global developments.
