Privacy policy

If the opportunity for the input of personal or business data (email addresses, name, addresses) is given, the input of these data takes place on an entirely voluntary basis. All offered services can also be used without providing personal data or by providing anonymous or pseudonymous data - as long as technically possible and feasible. In accordance with Paragraph 4 Clause 1 of Bundesdatenschutzgesetz/Federal German Data Protection Act, we must point out that the GIGA stores the address data of the subscribers to its newsletter. According to Paragraph 19 of Bundesdatenschutzgesetz/Federal German Data Protection Act, you have the right of information about the data stored regarding your person.

The GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies undertakes to use such data about your person only for the purposes named above and not to pass them on to third parties.

Cookies and Page Hits

We use “session cookies” provided by the VG Wort, a copyright collective based in Munich, to measure access to a given text in order to detect the probability of it being copied. Session cookies are small pieces of information that a provider stores in the memory of the visitor’s computer. A session cookie stores a unique, randomly generated identification number, referred to as a “session ID.” A cookie also contains information as to its origin and the storage period. Session cookies cannot store any other data. The measurements are carried out by INFOnline GmbH according to scalable central measurement methods (SZM), which help determine the likelihood of replication of individual pieces of text, serving the legal right to compensation of authors and publishers.

We collect no personal information through cookies.

Some of our pages are equipped with JavaScript functions, which we use to report access to VG Wort. This enables our authors to receive dividends from VG Wort, which ensures the legal compensation for the use of copyright-protected works pursuant to §53 UrhG.

It is also possible to use our website without cookies. Most browsers are set to automatically accept cookies. However, you can deactivate cookie storage or set your browser to inform you when cookies are sent.

Google Analytics

This website uses Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, Inc. (“Google”). Social Plug-Ins (Facebook, Twitter, Google+)

On the GIGA website, so-called “social plug-ins” from Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ are in operation. The GIGA does not collect any personal data via these social plug-ins or their use. To prevent data being transferred to these services without the knowledge of the user, the GIGA uses the Shariff plug-in from Heise Medien GmbH & Co. KG. The plug-in ensures that no personal data is passed on to the providers of the individual social plug-ins as long as you visit our site without using the social plug-ins. Only when you click on one of these social plug-ins can data be transmitted to the providers and stored by them.

Newsletters and E-Mail Updates

You can subscribe to various newsletters and e-mail updates on new publications and events. In addition to your e-mail address, you can voluntarily enter your full name, your company name, and your preferred language. These data are used only for sending our newsletters and e-mail updates.

For the delivery of our newsletters and e-mail updates we use the list provider MailChimp. MailChimp is a service of The Rocket Science Group, 675 Ponce de Leon Ave NE, Suite 5000, Atlanta, GA 30308, USA ( "Rocket"). When you register, your registration data is transmitted to and stored by Rocket. The data you entered during the registration is not submitted to any other third parties. After registering you will receive an e-mail by MailChimp to confirm your registration. Furthermore MailChimp provides different analysis options about how newsletters are opened and used, for example, to how many users an e-mail was sent, if e-mails were rejected and whether users have opted out after receiving an e-mail from a list. Analyses are conducted only group-related and are not used by us for individual evaluation.
