Sozialkapital im chinesischen Kontext: Einige Überlegungen und empirische Ergebnisse aus Taiwan

Abstract: Diese Studie geht der Frage nach den Determinanten von Sozialkapital, gemessen als soziales Vertrauen, im chinesischen Kontext nach. Dazu werden Umfragedaten aus Taiwan analysiert. Nach der Diskussion relevanter Literatur aus der generellen Forschung und dem speziell chinesischen Kontext werden Theorien der Bildung von sozialem Vertrauen in einem multivariaten Regressionsmodell getestet. Engagement in brückenbauenden und bindenden zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen, ein Gefühl der Lebenskontrolle und das Alter wurden als signifikante Determinanten des sozialen Vertrauens in Taiwan identifiziert. Im Ganzen deuten die Resultate auf eine Ähnlichkeit von – mittels Umfragen gemessenem – sozialem Vertrauen in chinesischen und westlichen Gesellschaften hin. Dieser Befund war aufgrund der theoretischen Literatur in vieler Hinsicht nicht zu erwarten.

Social Capital in the Chinese Context: Some Reflections and Empirical Evidence from Taiwan

Abstract: This paper empirically explores the determinants of social capital, measured as social trust, in the Chinese context using survey data from Taiwan. After discussing relevant available research from the general discussion and the Chinese context, theories regarding the creation of social trust are tested by means of a multivariate regression analysis. Activities within bridging and bonding formal civil society networks, a notion of control over one’s life and age are significantly related to social trust in Taiwan. Generally speaking the results implicate a similarity of social trust in Chinese and Western societies as measured with surveys that is not suggested by theoretical accounts.

Abstract: China’s draft labour contract law, released on March 21, 2006, has not only caused more than 190.000 comments and suggestions, but also stirred up a great deal of controversy among Chinese as well as overseas legal experts. Foreign business people even damned it as the return to the socialist “iron rice bowl”-system and threatened to withdraw investments. The law indeed strengthens the position of labourers, e.g., by making written contracts obligatory in all kinds of enterprises, discouraging short-term contracts, or expanding participatory rights of trade unions. It reflects the Chinese leadership’s lasting and increasing fear of social unrest. This short analysis describes the process of law making, the most important and controversial provisions as well as the developments in the Chinese labour market that led to the regulation of labour relations. The labour contract law complements the legal framework of the emerging market economy in China, its full implementation however is a different matter.

Abstract: The state council announced to slow down the speed of expansion in higher education and to focus more on education quality. Although the improvement of education quality isn’t really a new target within the Chinese higher education policy, the article shows that there seems to be a shift in the strategy how to achieve the goal of higher education quality. This shift means a move away from process-oriented higher education expansion towards an outcome-oriented improvement of education quality.

Abstract: China has enacted its Provisional Regulations on Organ Transplantation. This article outlines the content of this document in view of its historical context and discusses its implications with respect to social, ethical and cultural issues. It argues that the regulations are a significant step forward in aligning China’s health-related ethics framework with international standards. The impact of the legislation will largely depend on compliance amongst health professionals and acceptance by the general public in China.
