  • Education: studies economics, sociology and political science, University of Freiburg, 1969-1973, PhD and habilitation at University of Bremen
  • Professional career:
1981-1989: Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics, Bremen
1989-1996: Lecturer at University of Bremen
1996-2004: Professor at University of Leipzig, Institute of African Studies
Since 2004: President of GIGA and Professor at University of Hamburg and University of Leipzig
