• Studies in History, Political Science and Sociology at the University of Constance and the Ohio State University (1968-1974, M.A.); Doctorate in Political Science (Dr. rer. soc.; Thesis on “Oil, Nation State and National Development in Venezuela”, Constance 1983); Habilitation at the University of Hamburg 1996; award of the title “Professor” at the University of Hamburg 2004
