GIGA - Transfer of Knowledge

Transfer of Knowledge in Politics, Economy, and Society

The GIGA, in keeping with its ambitions as a research institute and think tank, conveys its research results through presentations at scientific forums, in the political and scientific communities, and in the public community in general. Alongside its primary task of publishing monographs, anthologies, and essays in specialist scientific journals (see GIGA Publications), GIGA also aims to share its research findings with the public, both through the media and by means of lectures given to political and economic decision makers.

To this end, GIGA representatives attend scientific conferences,  conduct media interviews (see GIGA/GIGA scientific staff members in the media) and give presentations (see News Africa, News Asia, News Latin America, and News Middle East).

GIGA Forum

The "GIGA Forum" lecture series consists of scientific lectures given by GIGA researchers and researchers from other research institutions. The lectures are intended for a broad public.

GIGA Forum

The researchers highlight current developments in the regions of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East or focus on new research results in the field of comparative area studies.

Scientific conferences

The active participation of the GIGA in both scientific conferences and in pertinent networks is an important means of disseminating the GIGA’s own scientific publications and encouraging crucial discussions within the scientific community. For this reason, GIGA joined the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) in December 2004; in doing so it aimed  to promote closer cooperation in political research throughout Europe. Furthermore, the GIGA participates in the annual congresses of regional professional associations such as the German Middle East Studies Association for Contemporary Research and Documentation (Deutsche Arbeitsgemeinschaft Vorderer Orient, DAVO), the Association for African Studies in Germany (Vereinigung für Afrikawissenschaften in Deutschland, VAD), the Consortium of German Latin America Research (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutsche Lateinamerikaforschung, ADLAF), and the German Association for Asian Studies (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Asienkunde e.V., DGA). GIGA representatives also attend relevant international symposia (e.g., WOCMES).

(Political) consultancy and presentations

An important aim of the GIGA is to provide political consultation based on the results of its own research. GIGA researchers regularly draft "Political-Economic Short Analyses" for the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and conduct the BMZ's Crisis Indicator Measurement for numerous countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. The GIGA also organises roundtables and discussion meetings on selected topics. To better reach its target audience, the GIGA has expanded this type of activity in Berlin. Since 2007 the GIGA has participated actively in the Federal Foreign Office’s Training for Foreign Diplomats programme, and in 2008 it also became involved in Inwent’s professional development programme for foreign experts and leadership staff. The GIGA also periodically organizes thematic workshops for special audiences for the purpose of political education.

The GIGA Institute of African Affairs, together with renowned partners, regularly organises dialogue forums in Berlin which address political and economic topics with international relevance:

The Berlin Africa Forum is a joint discussion series of the German-African Business Association, the GIGA and the KfW Development Bank. Current issues related to economic development in Africa are discussed biannually by a selected group of Africa experts from politics, economics, academics and civil society.
