GIGA ILAS
The GIGA Institute of Latin American Studies
- was founded in 1962 as the Institute for Ibero-American Studies. On January 1, 2007, the institute became part of the GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies and changed its name to the Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS).
- conducts research on political, economic, and social affairs in
contemporary Latin America. All researchers possess relevant regional expertise and language skills and make use of state-of-the-art theoretical and methodological approaches and tools.
- focuses on analyses of political, economic, and social actors, structures, and processes in Latin America.
- belongs to numerous national and international research associations (see Cooperation).
The GIGA operates one of Germany’s biggest specialised libraries on contemporary Latin America in Germany, the
GIGA Information Centre: Latin America Library .
