GIGA IMES - Cooperation
Cooperation
Academic excellence lives from academic exchange. This is true whether it is
exchange between institutes whose work is regional in nature or institutes whose
concerns are more theoretically based. Beyond scientific exchange within the
GIGA the IMES fulfills its obligation to maintain contacts with domestic and
foreign university and non-university facilities. Besides expanding cooperation
with other European regional research institutes, such as the SOAS in London
or the Institut de recherches et d'études sur le Monde arabe et musulman (IREMAM) in Aix-en-Provence, it is essential to extend interregional research
with partner facilities in North Africa, the Far East, and Middle East because
research requires personal contact and cooperative field research. Consequently,
existing contacts to universities and research institutes in the region, for
example, with the L'Institut de recherche sur le Maghreb contemporain (IRMC) in Tunis/Rabat, the Le Centre d'Etudes et de Documentation Economiques, Juridiques et Sociales (CEDEJ) in Cairo, or the CERMAC in
Amman are to be strengthened and expanded.
Observation of North Africa, the Near and Middle East leads to a continuous
transfer and exchange of knowledge. Exchange is mostly carried out within the
GIGA Institutes or in public conferences and colloquies. The transfer of knowledge
has different forms: participation in political events; lectures and talks,
within in the media; individual reports, and most especially through a broad
range of publications (GIGA
Focus Nahost).
