In June 2014, the leader of the so-called "Islamic State," Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, proclaimed a caliphate with a global reach. He has not fulfilled this claim. However, there is no end in sight to his rule of terror in parts of Iraq and Syria.

In a variety of research projects, the GIGA studies the causes of violence and conflict in the Middle East, as well as the roots and ideas of Islamism. On various topical pages, we have compiled analyses, media contributions, and information on our experts.

GIGA researcher Stephan Rosiny has examined the emergence of the Islamic State and the development of the terror regime in particular depth. In his most recent interviews, he has categorised the attacks in Kuwait and Tunisia as part of the IS strategy.
